The Western Ligurian Sea Authority has commissioned the construction of New Genoa breakwater, which has been entrusted to the “PERGENOVA BREAKWATER” consortium, comprising WeBuild, Fincosit, Fincantieri and Sidra. The breakwater’s base will rest on depths of up to a record-breaking 50 meters, and in its final configuration, it will span an overall length of 6,200 meters. Approximately 7 million tons of rock material will be used as the foundation on which prefabricated reinforced concrete elements, consisting of almost 100 cellular caissons, will be placed.

The project will involve around 1,000 people in its construction.

It is a unique work in the world, known for its complexity, size, and positive impact on the city and country system. With the realization of this project, Genoa is set to become a center of gravity for large ships and a great logistics hub for trade in Europe.

From an engineering perspective, the New Genoa breakwater is an impressive and unique work. Its base will rest on seabeds up to a record depth of 50 meters, and in its final configuration, it will span a total length of 6,200 meters. The construction will utilize 7 million tons of rock material as the foundation, on which prefabricated reinforced concrete elements composed of almost 100 cellular caissons will be placed. The caissons will measure up to 33 meters high, 35 meters wide, and 67 meters long, equivalent to the height of a ten-story building.

The new breakwater will facilitate the entry of large container ships, 400 meters long and 60 meters wide, as well as “World Class” cruise ships into the port of Genoa.
